1954 In the US House of Representatives, Republican Ruth Thompson of Michigan proposes a bill to ban the mailing or transportation of any ‘obscene, lewd, lascivious or filthy disc – or any other article capable of producing sound’ – a thinly disguised attempt to stem the growth of R&B.
